Watercolors

Vibrant color attracts the viewer to QUENTIN WALTER'S watercolor paintings, further involvement elicits ambiguous interpretations of her personal visual iconography. Quentin developed her own style of gestural drawing as the foundation for her paintings, which she classifies as neo-expressionistic colorism. "Mercedes,"' her art nouveau mannequin, acts as Quentin's alter-ego in her painted narratives, which are organized as a tiered world of river landscape, and sky. The imagery in her fanciful scenarios is inspired by Quentin's love of jazz and botany, and by being influenced by the use of scale in work by artist Claes Oldenburg. The improvisational and spontaneous nature of her uniqueness aligns Quentin's creativity with the Dadaists and Surrealists. Evidence of this affiliation is especially apparent in her treatment of water, with technical reference to automatism. Brush strokes of paint are freely applied, and later, images emerge and are refined.
